UK - Gas and substation blasts leave 2 dead

An explosion at a house in north-west London has killed at least one person. The incident which is believed to have been a gas explosion demolished a number of cottages. Two cottages were said to almost completely destroyed by the blast which left up to three people injured [Sky News / BBC].

In a separate incident an explosion at an electricity sub-station in Essex killed one individual and shut of electricity to a wide area. Dozens of firefighters fought the blaze near Chelmsford which sent clouds of toxic black smoke into the air [BBC].

Also dominating UK headlines is an investigation into the shooting of a man after a siege in west London on Tuesday night. Barrister Mark Saunders was shot by police after a 5 hour stand off with authorities. It has been suggested by some of Thursday’s papers that the lawyer had deliberately placed himself in a position whereby police were forced to shoot him. In the US it is sometimes referred to as ‘committing suicide by cop’ [BBC / Sky News].
